*** Press Release ***

San FranciscoThe San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) announced today the appointment of James M. Dougherty as the new Chief Safety Officer and Director of Transportation Safety. Dougherty’s appointment concludes a national search that fits into a larger, comprehensive set of agency-wide safety strategies that include a request for proposals to retain external experts to review safety practices. The SFMTA is also working to improve post-accident disciplinary procedures and to recertify and reinvigorate employee training. A recently launched, wide-ranging public awareness media campaign on safety has also augmented the SFMTA’s efforts.

The SFMTA looks forward to deploying a more robust and comprehensive safety program led by Dougherty, who will direct and administer all SFMTA employee and transportation safety programs.

Dougherty brings to the SFMTA 24 years of experience in transit safety, occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene and environmental protection. Since 2004, he served as the General Manager of Safety and Security at the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) in Charlotte, North Carolina. Prior to his tenure at CATS, Dougherty held safety leadership positions for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority in Cleveland, Ohio and served as a part-time police officer for 22 years.
