Release date: June 30, 2010 *** Press Release ***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: **PRESS RELEASE** SFMTA Board of Directors to Hear Partial Muni Restoration Recommendations Input from Muni Customers sought on restoration of service to some bus routes and rail lines affected by the May 8 service changes San Francisco—The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in San Francisco including the Municipal Railway (Muni), announced today that it will include at its Tuesday, July 6 Board of Director’s meeting a hearing on improving Muni service September 4. In May the SFMTA made reductions to Muni service that required extensive schedule changes on many bus routes and rail lines, accounting for an overall 10 percent service reduction. SFMTA staff will bring a set of recommended changes to the Board on Tuesday to restore 50 percent of those reductions. “As I stated in May and throughout our budget process, the SFMTA will seek out every opportunity to improve Muni service,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO. “Now we have the opportunity and I am pleased that we have been able to leverage the funds from our transportation partners to make real improvements for Muni customers.” As part of the Fiscal Year 2011-12 budget, the SFMTA Board of Directors approved a partial service restoration to go into effect in July 2011. However, due to stronger than expected revenue streams, operational efficiencies and new grant opportunities, staff is recommending the restoration of service on some routes and lines this fall. The full restoration is still scheduled for July 2011. With the aim of restoring service throughout the City, staff has considered technical data, community feedback and other policy considerations, such as distributing resources equitably to low income and minority customers, to inform these proposed changes. The capacity changes focus on weekday improvements, when crowding levels are highest. Service hour and late night frequency changes are proposed to be implemented seven days per week. If implemented, these investments in service would reduce crowding on the busiest routes, improve connectivity throughout the system and improve critical lifeline access for late night and Owl customers. Customer pass-ups would be reduced and wait times on some routes would be shortened. If approved, the proposed changes would be implemented on September 4, to coincide with the completion of the St. Francis Circle Rail Replacement Project. Similar to the December and May service changes, SFMTA staff will conduct a broad multilingual public information effort to inform customers about the September service changes.
