SFMTA Reminds Customers and Residents of N Line Construction this Weekend
Release date: Feb. 23, 2012
*** Press Release ***
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today reminds customers and San Francisco residents and visitors of the continuation of track improvement work on the Muni Metro system this coming weekend. Construction for the Church & Duboce Track and Street Improvement Project, which began last spring, and the new Carl Street Rail Replacement Project will require bus shuttle substitution on the N Judah Line as well as traffic detours. The round-the-clock construction is scheduled to continue for six consecutive weekends. The construction hours will be from 8 p.m., Fridays to 5 a.m., Mondays. A longer stretch of construction is scheduled from Friday, May 25 until Monday, June 4.
The projects will revitalize the Muni system by upgrading Muni tracks and essential systems and provide numerous streetscape and infrastructure improvements to the surrounding neighborhoods.
During the upcoming weekend construction periods, the N Line will be shut down with substitute service provided by bus shuttles from Ocean Beach to Church Street. No N Line service will be operated in the Metro subway; however, supplemental rail service will be in place between Castro Station and the Caltrain Station at 4th and King streets. For each weekend’s construction, Muni service adjustments and traffic detours will need to start an hour earlier at 7 p.m. each Friday and will continue through construction hours.
Construction dates have been coordinated between both the Church & Duboce and Carl Street projects as well as other track repairs to minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses, Muni customers, motorists and bicyclists.
Muni Service Impacts
N Judah Bus Shuttles
SFMTA Ambassadors will be in the area to provide information and to assist customers at transfer points.
The first weekend work on the Church & Duboce project will include track work on Duboce Avenue between Noe and Walter streets and the demolition of a portion of the Noe Street boarding island. The Carl Street project will include sewer work for the Public Utilities Commission on the south side of Carl Street between Arguello Boulevard and Hillway Avenue and between Stanyan and Shrader streets. In addition, a track crossover will be replaced on Judah Street between 20th and 21st avenues. The Switch Replacement Project is part of regular rail maintenance by Muni’s Maintenance of Way personnel. It will ensure a safer, more reliable transportation network by replacing worn infrastructure and keeping Muni in a state of good repair. This project is part of an upgrade of the existing track work along the L Taraval, N Judah and J Church lines.
Future J and N Line Shutdowns
The Church & Duboce Track and Street Improvement Project and the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project will require multiple partial rail service shutdowns or disruptions on the J Church and N Judah Muni lines and reroutes of local Muni bus service during the construction period that ends in 2013.
In addition to the individual line shutdowns on weekends, there will be a longer partial shutdown of the J Line and a full shutdown of the N Line beginning May 25. Work will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 25 and end at 5 a.m. on Monday, June 4, during which time the curved track at the intersection of Church and Duboce streets will be replaced. The N Owl, 22 Fillmore, 37 Corbett and 43 Masonic routes will also be affected.
All dates and details are subject to change due to weather or other operational issues.
