*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in the City, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today announced a community meeting on the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project, part of the Agency‘s continuing track improvement work on the Muni Metro system. Along with the Church and Duboce Track and Street Improvement Project, the Carl Street project will affect the N Judah light rail line over the next two years.

Beginning in early 2012 the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project will include:

  • Track replacement on Carl Street between Arguello Boulevard and Cole Street
  • The replacement of the overhead wire system in the project area
  • Traffic signal work at Carl and Stanyan streets
  • The installation of three rail lubrication devices
  • New street paving and pedestrian crossing upgrades
  • Water and sewer storm system work
  • The installation of transit bulbs at Carl and Cole streets and Carl and Stanyan streets

The transit bulbs will improve access for the nearly 5,700 daily users of the three stops covered in the project, allowing customers to board and exit the trains more safely, improve service on the N Judah by reducing delays due to illegally parked vehicles and is expected to reduce the time it takes for customers to board. The transit bulb streetscape improvements, which were developed with the community as part of a feasibility study concluded in 2008, are being incorporated into the Carl Street Rail Replacement project to minimize the impact to transit service and the surrounding community.

The SFMTA continues to aggressively prioritize keeping Muni in a state of good repair in order to provide safe and reliable service to its customers. Worn pavement and rails in this heavily traveled corridor require the replacement of rail and repaving of the intersections to keep the tracks in good operating condition. In addition to replacing and repairing aging Muni tracks and components, the project includes collaboration with other City departments to provide long-overdue enhancements to the surrounding area such as street repaving and re-striping, sidewalk improvements and upgraded water lines.

Construction on the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project is planned to begin in February and calls for several weekend shutdowns of portions of the N Judah Line from February 2012 to February 2013. Dates and details are subject to change due to weather and other unexpected conditions.Muni bus shuttle service will operate in place of the affected light rail service. This schedule will be coordinated with the rail project at Church and Duboce streets, which will also affect the N Judah line.

During this week’s meeting, SFMTA staff will give a presentation on the project and the project manager will be on hand to answer questions and take comments from the audience.
