SFMTA Drug & Alcohol Testing Policy

Beginning in 2013, the SFMTA will be requiring drug and alcohol testing for all taxi drivers.

Timing of Tests:  Drug and alcohol testing will be required at the following times.
  •  Pre-employment:  Every new A-Card holder will be required to pass a drug test prior to being issued an A-Card.
  • Random:  Every driver will have to have a drug test at a randomly selected time.
  • Post Accident:
  •  Probable Cause/ Reasonable suspicion:  If there is a reason to suspect drug use and/or alcohol misuse.

Location of tests:  To be determined.

Refusal:  If a driver refuses to be tested, he or she will be immediately removed from service and treated as if he or she has tested positive.  The driver will also be referred to a Substance Abuse Professional for follow up.

Cost:  Each driver will pay approximately $125.00/year to be in the program.  This amount covers all testing each year.

Non-Participation:  If a driver refuses to participate in this program, he or she will not be eligible to drive a taxi.
