*** Press Release ***

September 6, 2005

(San Francisco) – The results of this year’s rider survey regarding San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) service and performance were presented to the Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) board of directors today. The survey shows that approval ratings of Muni’s service remain high, with 65% of those surveyed rating Muni’s service as either good or excellent, and that Muni’s trend of providing excellent service continues.

The findings showed that 72% of riders felt that service had remained consistent over the last six months, while 12% have noticed an improvement in Muni service. Riders also continue to give favorable ratings to Muni’s performance in operating vehicles safely, providing accessibility for persons with disabilities, operator helpfulness, and ensuring safety and security for Muni riders.

Cleopatra Vaughns, Chair of the Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors, states, “I am encouraged by the survey report as it clearly indicates our focused approach toward improving Muni services as well as providing our employees withan optimum working environment."

Muni began conducting surveys through David Binder Research, a San Francisco-based firm, on an annual basis starting in 2001. The most recent survey, conducted this June, used the same methodology as in previous surveys. Each of the surveys consisted of interviews of 400 Muni riders living in San Francisco. The interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, and Cantonese. In addition, Muni and DPT employees were surveyed about various aspects of their jobs.

“We are quite pleased with the results of the rider and employee surveys,” said Stuart Sunshine, acting Executive Director of the Municipal Transportation Agency, the umbrella agency of Muni and DPT. “The surveys give us valuable information for concentrating on our improvement efforts, and they show that our employees have a lot to be proud of in providing quality service to our customers,” Sunshine continued.

Results from the survey of Department of Parking and Traffic (DPT) employees, conducted in July, show that three-fourths take pride in their work for DPT, and nearly two-thirds are satisfied with their job. Over 80% of Muni employees are satisfied with their jobs, and 62% of Muni employees state that they are proud of their work.
