Release date: Dump the Pump

*** Press Release ***

June 6, 2006

June 8th is “National Dump the Pump Day”

On Thursday, June 8th, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is one of the many transit systems across the country encouraging people to “dump the pump” and beat high gas prices by riding public transportation on the first National Dump the Pump Day.

National Dump the Pump Day underscores the importance of public transportation as the quickest way to beat high gas prices. Since 2003, gas prices have risen by 100 percent. As gas prices have spiked this spring, more and more people have chosen to ride public transportation. Throughout the country, transit agencies are reporting increased ridership, and some are even reporting record levels of ridership. SFMTA Muni Monthly Adult Fast Pass sales are up 12.3% from March '05 and monthly cash fares have also seen a jump with the rising gas prices.

Support for the “dump the pump” campaign is more than a one day focus for San Francisco. Although San Francisco is only 47.4 square miles, the SFMTA is the eighth largest transit system in the U.S. in terms of ridership. The SFMTA is looking to encourage ridership further by making plans for Bus Rapid Transit lines in such important transit corridors as Van Ness Avenue and Geary Boulevard (one of the most heavily traveled public transit corridors in the nation with 51,000 boardings each weekday). In addition, the SFMTA has just accepted the first of 56 diesel-electric hybrid buses, which will result in increased fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

Other major transit systems that will be participating on Thursday include those in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
