MTA Employees to Compete at International Rail Rodeo Competition This Saturday

The first and second place winners of the transit operators' competition and the first place maintenance team at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (MTA’s) Rail Rodeo will compete in the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA’s) International Rail Rodeo Competition to be held in New York City on Saturday, June 10th.

The MTA Rail Rodeo was held at the Green Light Rail Center on Saturday, April 29th. The Rodeo had separate events for Muni Metro light rail vehicle operators and maintenance teams. The operators competed in five events, including a safety quiz, a test of customer-service skills, vehicle inspection, and operation of a train through switches and signals. The three-member maintenance teams competed in nine events designed to measure each team’s skill, proficiency, and professionalism in a variety of problem-solving tasks directly related to the maintenance of the light rail vehicles.

Jason Lao came in the first and Marty Echeverria was second in the MTA’s rail operators’ competition. Fernando Leal, Ricardo Miles, and Vasily Tsurkan are the members of the first place maintenance team. This Saturday, they will be competing in New York City against representatives from 17 other transit agencies.

MTA Executive Director/CEO Nathaniel Ford said, “We’re proud to represent the City and County of San Francisco by having MTA’s best of the best at these international competitions.” Over the years, the MTA has fielded very strong teams for APTA’s international bus and rail competitions, and last year, MTA transit operator Kevin Grady won the International Roadeo Championship for bus drivers.
