*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees the Municipal Railway (Muni), advises Muni customers about its ongoing Muni Metro faregate improvement project – “Making way for a better way to pay.”  The faregates will help customers access the subway more quickly. Over the course of the next six months, the SFMTA will replace all of the existing faregates, emergency and swing gates, as well as installing new ticket vending machines at all Muni Metro stations.  Preliminary work has already been completed at the Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell Street, Civic Center, Van Ness and Church Street stations.  Construction will take place at Castro Station starting Tuesday, July 6 and last through Friday, July 9.

During construction, the set of faregates will have one faregate open. Please be aware of the potential for construction detours during construction. An accessible path of travel to access the Station Agent booths will be maintained by our construction contractors, and wayfinding signs will be posted directing customers along the route from the construction site to the booth/gate on the other end of the concourse.  If you have specific questions about the construction or new faregates and equipment, please e-mail translinkfeedback@sfmta.com.

Customers are reminded to keep their valid passes or transfers as proof-of-payment.  Cash-paying customers please note that transfers are free and valid for 90 minutes.  The fine for not having proof-of-payment is $75.
