*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all transportation in the city, today announced that in its continued effort to use technology to improve customer service the residential parking permit (RPP) program will have an online renewal payment option starting with April 1 renewals. Residents will then receive their permits in the mail. This option is in addition to the current mail and in-person renewal options. The first RPP areas to be renewed with this feature in place will be Areas “K” and “Z.”

More than 63,000 renewal notices are mailed to existing permit holders on a monthly basis by permit area. This new program will enhance customer convenience and improve processing time. As with other Agency online transactions, a $2.50 fee will apply. The remaining RPP areas (as shown on the RPP map-.pdf) will also have the online option when their renewals come up over the next 12 months.

The new online option applies to customers renewing annual RPPs and does not apply to specialty permits such as contractors, teachers, business/commercial, medical, student or caregiver permits. Customers will be required to pay any overdue parking citations prior to renewing their RPP permit online. This service is not available for first time permit customers who must submit proof of residency and application by mail or in-person only.

The RPP program is a neighborhood driven program implemented in 1976 to reduce commuter parking and provide preferential parking to residents. The SFMTA processes approximately 80,000 RPP permits per year. Further information about the SFMTA RPP program can be found at sfmta.com/permits.
