The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages transportation in the City, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today announced that construction for the SFMTA Balboa Park Station Pedestrian and Bicycle Connection Project on the south side of Ocean Avenue at the I-280 freeway on-ramp has been extended. The work is expected to be completed by Nov. 4; certain portions of the paving work may be completed next week. After the construction on the south side has been completed, another curb ramp will be installed at the northwest corner of the intersection. Eastbound traffic on Ocean Avenue will be one lane only and the K Ingleside Muni Line and the 49 Van Ness-Mission Muni Route will be impacted near the station.

The Balboa Park Station Pedestrian and Bicycle Connection Project will lead to improved safety for bicyclists and pedestrians in the vicinity of the Balboa Park Station. Earlier this month the SFMTA and the Department of Public Works (DPW) started installing curb ramps and pedestrian countdown signals on the north side of Ocean Avenue at the on-ramp to northbound I-280. The work expanded to the south side of the street on Oct. 22. Because this work is adjacent to the Balboa Park Station, it requires a lane closure and adjustments to Muni service.

Construction Schedule

9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1 to Friday, Nov. 4 (Additional work may be required next week.)

Muni Service Impacts

K Ingleside

  • The K Line impacts will only be in place during construction hours.
  • Outbound K Line light rail service to Balboa Park Station will bypass the station and continue on Ocean Avenue to San Jose Avenue at Geneva Avenue.
  • Customers will be let off at the San Jose and Geneva boarding island just south of the intersection.
  • The first inbound (toward downtown) K Line stop will be curbside on San Jose Avenue, north of Geneva Avenue
  • For accessible inbound boarding, customers should use the San Jose and Geneva boarding island just south of the intersection (also an M Ocean View stop)

49 Van Ness-Mission

  • The inbound (toward downtown) stop on Ocean Avenue at Balboa Park Station will be moved to a temporary stop on the west side of the freeway overpass at all times.
  • Signs will be in place to direct customers to the temporary bus stop.

Traffic Impacts

  • Eastbound Ocean Avenue traffic will narrow to a single lane of traffic through the construction area at all times.
  • Westbound Ocean Avenue and the I-280 freeway on-ramp will remain open.
  • Parking along the south side of Ocean Avenue overpass will be prohibited.
  • Travelers should expect delays in the area.

Parking Control Officers will be deployed at the Ocean Avenue construction area and at the intersection of Geneva and San Jose avenues to assist with traffic.

Project Benefits

The Balboa Park Station Pedestrian and Bicycle Connection Project consists of several improvements around Balboa Park Station that will improve the comfort and safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, provide a better end-to-end transit experience and make transit more inviting and convenient.

The improvements will include traffic and pedestrian signal improvements, crosswalk enhancements, new curb ramps and new station wayfinding signs.

All improvements are expected to be completed by fall 2012. The SFMTA will continue to identify funding sources to implement the remaining improvement proposals in the study.
