The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in the City including the Municipal Railway (Muni), estimates that the celebration for the World Champion San Francisco Giants drove an increase in ridership on the City’s transit system not seen since the flood of customers carried by Muni during the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl celebrations of 1988 and 1989. An increase of approximately 240,000 customers filled Muni buses and trains on Wednesday as they made their way to and from the parade and celebration.

“We were pleased to welcome the thousands and thousands of people who poured into the City to honor our World Champion Giants on Wednesday,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO. “Our primary function in these situations is to move people safely and at regular intervals so that people can enjoy the event. We are proud to have stepped up to that role to provide efficient and effective service for the many fans in the City that day."

Muni deployed at least six additional two-car trains, as needed, in the Muni Metro system to accommodate the additional customers headed to the parade route on Market Street above the subway and at the Civic Center celebration, which was adjacent to two Metro stations, Civic Center and Van Ness.

Frontline SFMTA personnel, including Parking Control Officers, Transit Fare Inspectors as well as Operators and Muni Street Supervisors, provided excellent service and assisted a high volume of customers.

The frontline staff also assisted in providing an estimate of the increased ridership on Muni by monitoring the six Metro lines, and several key transportation corridors around the City such as Geary Boulevard, Mission Street, California Street and Potrero Street.
