Release date: 10/18/10 *** Press Release ***The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in the City, today announced that it will install one trial taxi stand on 3rd Street near AT&T Park in conjunction with the Giants National League Championship baseball games on Tuesday, October 19 through Thursday, October 21. The trial stand will be located on the east side of 3rd Street just north of King Street in addition to the existing two stands on 2nd Street. This stand will be in effect on a trial basis during these playoff games to determine if a taxi stand at this location is convenient for fans attending events at AT&T Park and whether taxicabs will be able to easily reach this location during pre- and post-game traffic conditions. There are existing taxi stands near AT&T Park on the west side of Second Street just south of Townsend Street and on the west side of Second Street midway between Brannan and Townsend streets. The existing taxi stand on Second Street south of Townsend Street works well before and during events at AT&T Park. However, during the post-event period, all traffic on southbound Second Street is required to turn right onto westbound King Street because of safety concerns at the intersection of Second and King streets. In order to allow taxis leaving the ballpark area to avoid post-game traffic congestion on King Street, the taxi stand one block to the north on Second Street is also available. Taxis picking up customers at this taxi stand can turn right or left on Townsend Street to avoid post-event congestion on King Street.
