The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), reminds customers, residents and visitors to San Francisco of the numerous major events starting Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Monday, Oct. 8. The multiple events will significantly impact traffic throughout the city.

“This weekend will be a great one for our city and we have the transportation system as prepared as it can be. We urge anyone who will need to get around San Francisco that weekend to know their options, plan well, and leave their cars at home. We urge everyone to avoid delays by taking Muni, a bike, a taxi or a walk when getting around that week and weekend,” said Ed Reiskin, SFMTA Director of Transportation.

Attendees are encouraged to come early to avoid back-ups and are reminded that parking is limited at all event venues.

The major events that will take place between Oct. 2 and Oct. 8 include:

  • America’s Cup World Series – Marina Green (Tuesday through Sunday);
  • Fleet Week – northern and eastern waterfront (Tuesday through Monday; airshows on Saturday and Sunday);
  • Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival – Golden Gate Park (Friday through Sunday);
  • UNIQLO Grand Opening - Closes Ellis Street between Powell and Cyril Magnin streets (Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days);
  • Castro Street Fair – Castro District (Sunday);
  • Italian Heritage Parade – Fisherman’s Wharf to North Beach (Sunday);
  • Ten Ten Parade – Grant Avenue (Saturday);
  • 49ers Football – Candlestick Park (Sunday); and
  • Giants playoff baseball games - AT&T Park (Saturday and Sunday).

Additionally, a lane of northbound The Embarcadero between Washington and Bay streets will be converted to bicycle use only on Saturday and Sunday, and Stockton Street will be closed between Geary and Market streets as part of the on-going Central Subway construction. A cruise ship will unload and load on Saturday at Pier 35, adding to congestion on The Embarcadero.

America’s Cup World Series

The 34th annual America’s Cup World Series, a professional boat racing event, will take place from Tuesday through Sunday. The main viewing areas and the America’s Cup Village are at the west end of Marina Green. Demonstrations and practice races will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Races will take place Thursday from 12:20 to 1 p.m. and 5:10 to 6:20 p.m., Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Approximately 300,000 people are expected to attend. All Muni lines in the event area will experience increased ridership and traffic.

To accommodate the crowds for these events:

  • The F Market & Wharves will be supplemented by an F-line shuttle Saturday and Sunday; The F line shuttle will operate from Spear Street and Market Street to Pier 39. Passengers at the Embarcadero Station should use exit B-4.
  • The E-Embarcadero streetcar line from Caltrain Depot will run on Saturday and Sunday;
  • From Thursday through Sunday, the SFMTA will supplement service on the 47 and 49 routes with the 47L Van Ness Limited-Stop special bus service;
  • On Saturday and Sunday, the 47 Local will receive additional service (tentative, based on need);
  • In coordination with SFMTA, key regional transit operators are also offering special-event level service this weekend to carry more riders, including BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, the PresidiGo shuttle and San Francisco Bay Ferry routes.

Ample bicycle parking will be provided.

Fleet Week

Fleet Week activities will extend from Crissy Field to Aquatic Park, with special activities at Pier 80, from Thursday, Oct 4 to Monday, Oct 8.

The SFMTA will provide complimentary access to Muni service for all military personnel (with Military ID or in uniform) in honor of Fleet Week.

The Blue Angels will practice on Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday between 12:30 and 4 p.m.

Over the weekend, the Parade of Ships, two air shows and ship tours will be held to celebrate the U.S. Navy Fleet Week. These events will impact the Fisherman’s Wharf area and the Marina District. More than 300,000 people are anticipated for these events each weekend day.

The celebration will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Parade of Ships and continue on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. with the air show. Ship tours will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Saturday through Monday.

To accommodate the crowds for these events:

  • The F Market & Wharves will be supplemented by an F-line shuttle Saturday and Sunday; The F line shuttle will operate from Spear Street and Market Street to Pier 39. Passengers at the Embarcadero Station should use exit B-4;
  • The E-Embarcadero streetcar line from Caltrain Depot will run on Saturday and Sunday;

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

From Friday through Sunday the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Concert will take place at Hellman Hollow, Lindley and Marx Meadows in Golden Gate Park. The concerts will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. An attendance of 40,000 participants is expected each day.

Heavy ridership is anticipated before and after the event, the SFMTA will provide additional Muni buses on the following line and routes:

  • N Judah
  • 5L Fulton: limited stop service 5L buses going between the Civic Center BART/Muni Metro station and Golden Gate Park will board on Grove Street at Larkin Street
  • 28 19th Avenue
  • 29 Sunset

The following are preferred boarding locations after the event:

  • N Judah – Judah Street and Sunset Boulevard
  • 5L Fulton – Fulton Street at 25th Avenue and Fulton Street at 30th Avenue

The last vehicles will depart these locations at 8 p.m. each night.

Good taxi locations include La Playa Street, or the Avenues near Lincoln Way on the south side of the park, or on the Avenues near the north side of the park on Fulton Street. Parking is very limited in Golden Gate Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. Several streets in Golden Gate Park will be closed to traffic including JFK Drive, Transverse Drive and Middle Drive West.

Castro Street Fair

On Sunday the Castro Street Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Organizers expect about 150,000 people to attend this event.

The following street closures will be required from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.:

  • Market Street from Noe to Eureka streets
  • Castro Street from 16th to 19th streets
  • 18th Street from Noe to Diamond streets
  • 17th Street from Hartford to Castro streets
  • Intersections: Castro and Market streets, 18th and Market streets, 18th and Collingwood streets

Westbound Market Street traffic will detour at Noe Street to Clipper Street; eastbound will detour at Diamond Street to 19th Street. Motorists traveling north from Market Street towards Divisadero Street should use 14th Street.

The following Muni lines and routes will be affected:

  • F Market
  • K Ingleside
  • L Taraval Owl buses
  • M Ocean View
  • 24 Divisadero
  • 33 Stanyan
  • 35 Eureka
  • 37 Corbett

Taxi zone located at the corner of 16th and Noe streets. Parking is very limited in the Castro neighborhood.

Italian Heritage Parade

On Sunday the 144th annual Italian Heritage Day Parade will be held in North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf beginning at 12:30 p.m. from Jefferson and Powell streets and proceed to Washington Square. The parade should last 2.5 hours and 150,000 people are expected.

The parade formation will require the following street closures, beginning at 8 a.m.:

  • Powell Street between Chestnut and Beach streets
  • Stockton Street between Bay and North Point streets
  • Beach Street between Powell and Stockton streets
  • North Point Street between Mason Street and The Embarcadero
  • Francisco Street between Stockton and Mason streets

The parade route will be closed to traffic until the parade clears.

The following Muni lines and routes will be affected:

  • Powell-Mason Cable Car
  • F Market & Wharves
  • 8X Bayshore Express
  • 30 Stockton
  • 39 Coit
  • 45 Union/Stockton
  • 47 Van Ness

Parking is very limited in the North Beach neighborhood.

Ten Ten Flag Raising and Parade

On Saturday the annual Chinese Ten Ten Celebration will include a flag raising ceremony and parade. Organizers expect about 1000 people to attend. The parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. from St. Mary’s Square at Pine and Quincy. It will continue west on Pine, north on Grant to east on Jackson and disburse between Grant and Kearny.

San Francisco police officers will direct traffic. Muni buses will be allowed through the parade on Grant Avenue at California, Sacramento and Clay streets. Expect minor delays.

49ers Football Game

The San Francisco 49ers will host the Buffalo Bills starting at 1:25 p.m. at Candlestick Park. A sellout crowd of 68,000 fans is anticipated.

Motorists should expect delays on all bridges and freeways leading into San Francisco for at least two hours before the start of the game and for at least two hours after the end of the game. Muni offers several ways to get to Candlestick Park from locations throughout San Francisco. There are four Muni Express routes and two Shuttles.

The Muni Express route is Special Event Fare Service

  • Adult fare: $12 roundtrip
  • Youth/Senior/Disabled fare: $10 roundtrip
  • Muni monthly pass, Passport or CityPass Special Event Add-on fare: $8 roundtrip (adult and discount pass holders)

The Candlestick Shuttles are regular fare service, $2 adult per trip and $.75 for youth/senior/disabled per trip.

In order for Clipper customers with a monthly pass to obtain the add-on fare discount, at least $8 in cash value must be loaded to their Clipper cards prior to boarding the special event Muni service.

Customers can load their cards online at www.clippercard.com (please allow at least five days for processing), or at one of the participating Clipper vendors or ticket vending machines in a Muni Metro station. Please go to www.sfmta.com for fare details.

For service to and from the game, T Third customers should transfer at the Gilman/Paul station to the 87 Candlestick Shuttle, which operates directly between the station and Candlestick Park.

Muni customers may purchase their fare in advance. SFMTA staff will sell Muni fares at the following locations:

  • Balboa Park BART Station
  • Sutter Street/Sansome Street

Pre-game Service:

  • 75X Candlestick Express – from Balboa Park BART
  • 77X Candlestick Express – from California and Van Ness
  • 78X Candlestick Express – from California and Funston
  • 79X Candlestick Express – from Sutter and Sansome
  • 86 Candlestick Shuttle – from Bacon and San Bruno
  • 87 Candlestick Shuttle – from Third Street and Gillman, T Third Station

Post-game Service:

  • 75X Candlestick Express – to Balboa Park BART
  • 77X Candlestick Express – to Van Ness and North Point
  • 78X Candlestick Express – to California and Funston
  • 79X Candlestick Express – to Kearny and Sutter
  • 86 Candlestick Shuttle – to Bacon and San Bruno
  • 87 Candlestick Shuttle – to Third Street and Gillman, T Third Station

79X Candlestick Express Re-route

The southbound 79X Candlestick Express, which provides express service to the 49ers game from downtown, will be re-routed all season due to Central Subway construction on Stockton and 4th streets. Customers traveling to the game can board the 79X Candlestick Express at the following locations:

  • Sutter and Sansome
  • Sutter and Kearny
  • Mason and Geary
  • Cyril Magnin and Market
  • 5th Street and Mission
  • 5th Street and Howard
  • 5th Street and Folsom

The southbound buses will then travel express to Candlestick Park from 5th and Folsom. Northbound buses will remain on their regular route.

San Francisco Giants Playoff Baseball Games

On Saturday and Sunday the San Francisco Giants will most likely host playoff games at AT&T Park. Times have not yet been set. Anticipated sellout crowds of 42,000 fans are anticipated.

Heavy traffic would be expected both before and after the games. Game attendees and those traveling in the area are encouraged to take public transit.

Taxi zones are located at 2nd and Townsend; 2nd and King; and Third and King.
