*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in San Francisco, today began adjusting rates at 1,129 motorcycle parking spaces in SFpark pilot areas. Most of these spaces will see lowered hourly rates, including many downtown spaces where prices will be reduced 30 percent from $0.70 to $0.50. Rates at metered motorcycle parking spaces outside of SFpark pilot areas will remain the same.

“These meter rate changes are significant as the first demand-responsive price change for the SFpark pilot. They demonstrate the SFMTA’s commitment to setting smart rates for parking,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO. “These changes will make it easier for motorcyclists to find an open parking space, and soon we will do the same for motorists throughout the pilot areas.”

Based on demand, the hourly rates at motorcycle parking within the SFpark pilot areas will be lowered $.10 to $.20 at 76 percent of metered motorcycle spaces in places where demand is low, hourly rates will increase no more than $.10 at six percent of spaces where demand is very high and will stay the same at 18 percent of spaces. The rates on the affected meters will be adjusted over the next 10 days. The meters at most of the motorcycle spaces have not been replaced. They accept coins and SFMTA parking cards. Sales locations and more information about the cards can be found at www.sfmta.com/parkingcard.

To determine the new rates, the SFMTA’s SFpark team surveyed parking occupancy at all metered motorcycle parking spaces in SFpark pilot areas at various times of day. During the two year SFpark pilot project, SFpark staff will evaluate motorcycle parking occupancy every quarter to see where prices need to be adjusted to help achieve a target availability of between 10 and 30 percent so that it is easier to find an open parking space. The SFMTA will begin monthly demand-responsive price adjustments at metered car parking spaces in SFpark pilot areas early next year.

SFpark is a federally-funded demonstration of new parking management technology and approaches to make parking easier to find and more convenient, thereby reducing circling and double-parking.
