*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates the Municipal Railway (Muni), today reminds Senior (65+) “S” monthly pass customers that they must load their June “S” pass on the reloadable Senior Clipper card. As of this month, the paper version of the Senior monthly paper pass will no longer be sold. Seniors, who wish to use the monthly pass, must load the June pass to a Senior Clipper card by June 3.

“We want to make the transition to the Clipper card as convenient as possible for our customers,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO. “We will continue to reach out to the community and work with our City partners to help our customers make the switch.”

Last August, the SFMTA launched an extensive, tri-lingual "Time to Switch"marketing and outreach campaign to inform its customers of the change from the paper pass to the reloadable, plastic Clipper card. As a result, the agency has successfully transitioned 100 percent of its “A” Fast Pass®, Disabled discount pass, Muni-only “M” pass customers and, to date, nearly 35 percent of the 24,000 “S” pass customers to the Clipper card.

The remaining 16,000 Senior “S” pass customers have until June 3 to make the change to Clipper. . The SFMTA has signed up and issued nearly 31,000 senior customers to the Senior Clipper card, so most senior customers now have a card. Seniors may do so through any number of channels including the Muni Ticket Vending Machines in all Metro Stations, Clipper distributors (such as most Walgreens) or by calling the Clipper Service Bureau at 877.878.8883.

Seniors who have not yet received a Senior Clipper card may sign up and receive one on-the-spot by completing an application at any one of the locations or events listed below. Seniors must apply in person and show one of the following as proof of identity and age:

  • Birth certificate
  • State-Issued Driver’s License
  • State-Issued Identification Card
  • Passport
  • San Francisco City ID Card
  • Matricula Consular/Consular Identification
  • Alien Registration/Permanent Resident Card

Clipper staff will never ask for a social security number.

Event details can be found on the SFMTA Clipper page.

In addition to the "Time to Switch" campaign that included bus and station ads as well as television announcements, for the past three months “S” pass customers received their paper passes wrapped with a brochure alerting them to the deadline and providing them with specific information about how to acquire a Senior Clipper card.

Monthly Muni passes loaded on a Clipper card work the same as they always have; however, instead of throwing the passes away at the end of the month, customers will reload their Clipper cards again and again, saving Muni time and money – and helping the environment.

The Clipper card offers customers a number of other advantages as well. Customers can sign up for balance protection, in the event their card is lost or stolen. They can also apply for automatic reload, which will replenish the cash value on their card when it dips below a certain amount or load the next month’s pass when the previous month’s pass expires. In addition, senior discounts are automatically applied and transfers are automatically stored on the Senior Clipper cards, eliminating the need for paper transfers. Clipper is also good on Muni’s fellow transit systems, BART, AC Transit, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, SamTrans and VTA, allowing customers to ride throughout the Bay Area with just one transit card.
