*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in the City, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today reminds Muni customers who use the monthly discounted Youth Pass that they must load the August pass on the reloadable Youth Clipper card. Four locations are now available for Youth Pass customers who still need a Clipper card to pick up a card on the spot, including this Saturday, Aug. 6.

To date, 17,000 Youth customers have applied and received their Youth Clipper card. Youth customers with cards may load their August Youth pass through any one of the following channels:

  • Ticket Vending Machine in the Muni Metro Stations
  • Clipper distributor. Go clippercard.com for one near you
  • Clipper website at clippercard.com or
  • Call 877.878.8883

The four locations listed below are available for application processing and immediate card issuance services for those Youth Pass customers who do not already have a Clipper card. Youths or their parent/guardian must apply in person and show valid proof of age.

  • Clipper Customer Service Centers
    • Mezzanine level of the Embarcadero BART/Muni Station

Monday through Friday 5:45 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition, the SFMTA Customer Service office will be open to process Youth Clipper cards only on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No other services will be available.

Valid proof of age includes any one of the following:

  • Birth certificate
  • State-Issued Driver’s License
  • State-Issued Identification Card
  • Passport
  • San Francisco City ID Card
  • Matricula Consular/Consular Identification
  • Alien Registration/Permanent Resident Card

While youth as well as seniors are required to prove their age when they apply for the Clipper card, no legitimate Clipper card representative will ever ask for an applicant’s social security number.

Last August, the SFMTA launched an extensive, tri-lingual "Time to Switch" marketing and outreach campaign to inform its customers of the change from the paper pass to the reloadable, plastic Clipper card. As a result, the agency has successfully transitioned its “A” Fast Pass®, Disabled discount, “M” Muni Only and Senior pass customers. This campaign included holding numerous outreach events at Muni Metro stations, retailers, community centers, schools and civic events as well as distributing transition notices attached to each type of paper pass sold through the SFMTA pass sellers for three consecutive months.

Monthly Muni passes loaded on a Clipper card work the same as they always have; however, instead of throwing the passes away at the end of the month, customers will reload their Clipper cards again and again, saving Muni time and money – and helping the environment.

The Clipper card offers customers a number of other advantages as well. Customers can sign up for balance protection, in the event their card is lost or stolen. They can also apply for automatic reload, which will replenish the cash value on their card when it dips below a certain amount or load the next month’s pass when the previous month’s pass expires. In addition, transfers are automatically stored on Clipper cards, eliminating the need for paper transfers. Clipper is also good on Muni’s fellow transit systems, BART, AC Transit, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, SamTrans and VTA, allowing customers to ride throughout the Bay Area with just one transit card.

For more information on where to obtain or how to use the Youth Clipper card is available at www.sfmta.com or by calling 311.
