*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) SFpark pilot project will activate 20 new multi-space parking meters in the Civic Center area today and 20 more by Wednesday. The new multi-space meters, which accept coins, credit/debit cards and SFMTA parking cards, will replace older meters, covering 270 metered spaces. Eventually, the old, single-space parking meter heads will be removed to allow for the installation of bicycle parking racks.  A team of “meter greeters” in blue SFpark t-shirts will be on hand to assist customers with the new meters.

“Installing better parking meters is just the first step towards making parking easier to find and easier to pay for,” said SFMTA Executive Director/CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “Circling for parking accounts for approximately 30 percent of city congestion. By reducing double-parking and circling, SFpark will reduce congestion and air pollution, and promises to support our efforts to make Muni more reliable.”

Installing new parking meters is a key aspect of SFpark, a federally-funded pilot project that combines new parking management technology and approaches to make parking easier to find, thereby reducing circling and double-parking. Over the remainder of 2010, more than 5,100 existing metered spaces in eight pilot areas will receive new “coin and card” meters. For details visit, please visitwww.sfpark.org/meters.
