SFMTA Executive Director/CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. issued the following statement today regarding the collision between two SFMTA light rail vehicles at West Portal Station at approximately 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.

"We want to first express our deep concerns to those who were injured in yesterday's accident as well as to their families," said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO. "We are committing all available resources to assist in the investigation being led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the California Public Utilities Commission. We will do everything we can to ensure that this sort of accident never happens again."

According to the latest information from the San Francisco Police and Fire Departments, 47 people were transported to San Francisco hospitals as a result of the incident. As of Sunday afternoon the San Francisco Police Department reports that four people, including the operator of the striking LRV, remain at San Francisco General Hospital.

The NTSB is the lead investigating agency and will provide any ongoing details of the investigation as they become available.
