Release date: 12/2/10 *** Press Release ***The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages the Municipal Railway (Muni), today joined its non-profit partner, the Market Street Railway (MSR), to unveil the canopy for Geneva Streetcar Yard at the intersection of San Jose and Geneva avenues, completed by Shimmick Construction Company, Inc. that will shelter the historic streetcars of the popular F Market & Wharves streetcar line and the line’s newest addition, President’s Conference Committee (PCC) streetcar number 1071. The cost of the canopy project was approximately $11 million. Streetcar 1071 is the first completed car of 16 PCCs that will be rehabilitated as part of an $18.7 million contract with Brookville Equipment Corporation (BEC). “The success of the F Line is a tribute to SFMTA’s streetcar operators, mechanics and crafts workers along with a host of City advocates who work so tirelessly to keep these streetcars on the rails,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., SFMTA Executive Director/CEO. “While we can all appreciate these streetcars as important pieces of history, for our transit operations they are a key part of Muni’s effort to provide daily service to nearly 700,000 customers.” The F Market & Wharves Line carries more than 20,000 customers on an average weekday. The historic streetcars of the F Market Line are one of the City's most popular attractions, just like the cable cars, with locals and tourists alike. Together, they carry more than 40,000 customers per day, a number that indicates the importance of their additional capacity to the total Muni’s system. Geneva Yard Canopy The historic streetcar fleet of electric rail vehicles used on the F Market & Wharves Line includes PCCs, “Milan cars” with a Peter Witt design from Milan, Italy, and other vintage streetcars from the U.S. and around the world ranging in age from 50 to more than 100 years. The SFMTA currently runs 24 historic streetcars in regular daily revenue service. This fleet is supported by additional vintage vehicles available for special and reserve service. The canopy will provide protection for these antique vehicles from inclement weather, moisture and long-term sunlight exposure. The enclosure covers six tracks which form the primary storage and maintenance yard for these vehicles, sheltering up to 24 streetcars. Shimmick Construction Company, Inc. executed the design-build contract in two phases. Phase one included the design, surveys and permits. Phase two was the construction work itself. Since Geneva is a working transit yard, this type of contract was beneficial sot that the designer and contractor could work in close coordinate to better respond to issues arising during construction, thus minimizing delays. The total project cost was $10.1 million, which was funded by federal, state and local capital funds. The local investment included funding from the San Francisco Municipal Railway Improvement Corporation (SFMRIC). The Geneva Historic Car Enclosure Project was funded by federal, state and local funds. This includes more than $700,000 from SFMRIC. PCC No. 1071 This newly refurbished streetcar was purchased along with 10 others from New Jersey Transit in 2004. The PCCs from New Jersey Transit are single-end streetcars built between 1946 and 1948 for the transit system in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. The other five PCC being refurbished under this contract are original San Francisco streetcars. Streetcar 1071 will operate in its original Twin City Rapid Transit livery of green and gold. The first completed PCC will undergo inspection by SFMTA personnel in order to ensure that all issues are addressed and that the rehabilitation of the remaining 15 vehicles is done correctly by BEC. The remaining 15 PCCs in this project will be refurbished over the next two years. This rehabilitation includes re-engineering of the electrical and propulsion systems, inspection of current ancillary electrical systems and rewiring all lighting systems. Structural and accessibility upgrades were made shortly after the initial procurement. This project is part of a larger, $31.5 million fleet expansion program that will see the rehabilitation of 26 additional historic streetcars. All of the projects in the program will be funded by federal, state and local funds, including more than $800,000 from SFMRIC for this project and $3.5 million in Prop. K funds. |
