San Francisco—Today the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) with support from the San Francisco Taxi Commission invited members of the taxi industry and other stakeholders to apply to join a new body called the Taxi Advisory Group (TAG). The TAG will provide input to the SFMTA as the agency works to develop a Taxi Merger Business Plan in anticipation of the future transfer of the duties of the Taxi Commission to the SFMTA. “The Taxi Advisory Group will be a crucial voice in our ongoing efforts to improve taxi service for residents and visitors alike,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom, who earlier this year introduced legislation to merge the Taxi Commission into the SFMTA. “We have to hear from all taxi stakeholders to make this merger a success.” “Taxis are a key component of San Francisco’s transportation system,” said Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr., Executive Director/CEO of the SFMTA. “As we take this next step to consolidate management of The City’s ground transportation system and make it more efficient and more responsive to everyone, we need the experience and expertise that the TAG members will provide.” Individuals interested in serving on the TAG should complete the Taxi Advisory Group Statement of Interest form available at www.sfmta.com/taxi and submit it to the SFMTA by Monday, July 21. TAG appointments will be made by August 1. The nine-member TAG will include one representative each from six taxi stakeholder groups described on the form as well as three members of the general public. In May the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution declaring its intent to support a merger provided that the SFMTA develop an efficiency plan within 180 days. The Board’s authority to transfer the taxi function is provided for in Proposition E, the 1999 Charter Amendment that established the SFMTA as the City and Country’s transportation agency. This power was further clarified in Proposition A, a Charter Amendment passed by voters in November 2007. |
