*** Press Release ***

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates the Municipal Railway (Muni), will close the Montgomery Station sales booth as of 8 p.m., Feb. 3.

The SFMTA will alert customers of the closure and the available options with station signage and through outreach at the sales location. Starting Jan. 27, the SFMTA will deploy Service Ambassadors at the station during peak commute hours to let customers know about the closing, answer questions and direct customers to alternative sales locations. In an effort to make customers’ commutes easier, the SFMTA encourages all Muni customers to switch to TransLink.® TransLink is the convenient way to pay for transit fares throughout the Bay Area and is currently accepted on AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Dumbarton Express, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry and all Muni vehicles except cable cars.

TransLink street teams will be on site at the Montgomery Station on Jan. 28 and Feb. 1 from 7 to 10 a.m. and Jan. 29 and Feb. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. The teams will distribute free TransLink cards, answer questions and provide customer assistance with loading fare value at the Add Value Machines (AVMs). Customers who are unable to obtain a TransLink card at the station may request a TransLink card online at Those customers who order their card online and set up auto load will have the $5 card fee waived.

Later this year the SFMTA will begin installing new fare gates that will eventually accept only TransLink cards or the new Muni limited use tickets. Along with these fare gates, there will be new Muni vending machines throughout the metro stations that will offer limited use tickets and TransLink cards.

Customers still wishing to purchase a paper pass should visit or call 311 for more information on approximately 200 vendors who sell Muni passes.
