San Francisco—The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates the Municipal Railway (Muni) and oversees the surface transportation network in San Francisco, will host three community meetings in the coming weeks to outline the Rail Improvement Project, which represents the next step in Muni infrastructure improvement.

The Rail Improvement Project will target priority light rail segments throughout San Francisco for crucial system maintenance. It will begin this summer with five locations on the N Judah and L Taraval Muni lines:

  • Judah Street at La Playa
  • Judah Street at 19th Avenue
  • Judah Street at Sunset Boulevard
  • Taraval Street at 19th Avenue
  • Taraval Street at Sunset Boulevard

In addition to replacing and repairing aging Muni streetcar tracks and track components, this work will also include enhancements to the surrounding area such as street repaving and restriping, sidewalk improvements and upgraded water lines. The SFTMA is working closely with other City departments such as the Department of Public Woks and the Public Utilities Commission to coordinate these efforts. Repairs to the tracks will benefit neighbors as well as Muni customers by reducing the noise and vibration from the streetcars.

“In two years, the Muni system will be 100 years old. Much of the infrastructure requires significant reinvestment in order to ensure that the system will serve the City for another 100 years,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., SFMTA Executive Director/CEO. “Reinvesting in this public asset will make Muni safer, more efficient and more reliable.”

SFMTA staff will be available at the three scheduled community meetings to review the plan and answer community questions.
