Release date: 9/16/10 *** Press Release ***Public input essential for San Francisco’s transportation future The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in San Francisco including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today announced that it will present an annual report on the state of the Agency and discuss future plans at the next SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 21. “The SFMTA has long played a role in the economic and cultural vitality of the City,” said Tom Nolan, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “We look forward to working with the public to continue to improve San Francisco’s transportation system.” “As we strive to overcome current economic difficulties, we have an obligation to also look to the future,” said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO. “Transportation in the City will grow and change in the coming years and we want to ensure that it works for all San Franciscans.” The SFMTA is a unique institution in North America as it is the only transportation agency which oversees a city’s comprehensive transportation system. The Agency operates and manages a system encompassing pedestrians, bicycles, transit, taxis, traffic and parking. The conversation that will begin at Tuesday’s Board meeting will, guided by the SFMTA 2008-2012 Strategic Plan, cover all aspects of the SFMTA as well as the City’s and regional economic environment, including the Agency’s own financial health, current successes and future challenges. The presentation will end with the discussion of a framework that will organize policies, initiatives and actions for the Agency. San Francisco’s transportation policies and infrastructure have long been shaped by its residents through voter mandates and campaigns. This discussion must include public input and the SFMTA will ensure that ample opportunity is provided to those who wish to help shape the future of transportation in San Francisco.
