(San Francisco) – The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) received the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) 2005 Employer of the Year Award for its work in the transportation industry for minorities.

The Annual COMTO Award Recognition Program was held August 18th, in the Carnelian Room at the Bank of America Center, in San Francisco. On hand to accept the award on behalf of the MTA was Cleopatra Vaughns, Chair of the MTA Board of Directors and Stuart Sunshine, Acting Executive Director of Transportation. On hand for the Awards Recognition Program was Julie Cunningham, National President/CEO of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials headquartered in Washington, DC.

“The MTA has a tradition and legacy of promoting diversity and providing opportunities for minorities and women, so that to receive this recognition is especially gratifying,” stated Chair Vaughns.

Founded in 1971 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, COMTO was created to provide a forum for senior minority professionals in the transportation industry, and raises government awareness of relevant issues at local, state and national levels. COMTO is widely recognized for its national and local programs, including sponsored initiatives, such as the Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) program. The organization serves as a resource for creating opportunities in the transportation industry for minorities, and has programs that provide scholarships as well as the occasion for networking, training and continuing education.

The San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni, a division of the MTA) provides public transportation to almost 700,000 riders on an average weekday. Muni is the 8th largest transit system in terms of ridership in the United States, and serves the City of San Francisco with 80 lines.
