San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Director Ed Reiskin are proud to announce the Sunday Streets 2013 season kick off on Sunday, March 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year marks Sunday Streets’ fifth anniversary. The Embarcadero event reprises the popular 3.3-mile route on the northbound lanes of The Embarcadero and on 3rd Street from Terry Francois Boulevard to King Street.

“I am delighted to announce the season kick off of one of San Francisco’s favorite outdoor events—Sunday Streets,” said Mayor Lee. “We are proud to have the first Sunday Streets event on San Francisco’s waterfront where many exciting events, such as the America’s Cup races and the grand opening of the Exploratorium at Pier 15, will take place later this year.”

The Sunday Streets 2013 season will feature several events taking place from March through October along routes of two to five miles in length all over San Francisco. The events transform our city streets into open spaces for everything from yoga to roller disco to first bike riding lessons.

“As the lead agency for Sunday Streets, the SFMTA is pleased to offer opportunities for residents and visitors to get out and be more physically active and explore new areas of the city,” said Reiskin. “Sunday Streets promotes sustainable transportation and helps lead the way for other kinds of car-free initiatives in San Francisco and beyond.”

This season’s events will offer participants the opportunity to enjoy many popular Sunday Streets programs and activities. This Sunday the Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District will present their fifth annual “Family Fun Fest” at the Triangle Lot on the corner of The Embarcadero and Powell Street with a variety of activities for all ages. Pier 39 will join the fun with activities including a bouncy basketball toss and inflatable obstacle course, live music and a special Sidewalk Sale featuring fabulous deals from participating merchants.

Sunday Streets is presented by the SFMTA and Livable City, the non-profit fiscal partner and manager of Sunday Streets’ daily operations. The Mayor’s Office, San Francisco Police Department, Department of Public Works (DPW), Recreation and Parks Department, and other city agencies provide leadership and resources to sustain this popular family friendly program.

A range of non-profit partners and corporate sponsors provide essential support for Sunday Streets, including the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, the YMCA of San Francisco and the California Outdoor Rollersports Association. Free bike rentals and repairs are provided by Parkwide LLC Bicycle Rentals, and sports retailers Mikes Bikes, REI and Sports Basement provide free bike tune-ups at every Sunday Streets event.

In kind support also comes from the Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and City CarShare. Clear Channel Radio and The San Francisco Examiner are major season media sponsors.

Major funding for Sunday Streets is provided by: Bank of America, AT&T, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, SEIU-United Health Care Workers, Shape Up SF, Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco Federal Credit Union and the Exploratorium.
