*** Press Release ***

Today Tom Nolan, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Ed Reiskin, Director of Transportation for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), issued the following statement on the California Senate’s historic vote to approve SB 1029 in support of high-speed rail and transit in California.

“The SFMTA salutes California’s leadership for putting forth a vision of California’s future that is vibrant and sustainable. The passage of SB 1029 provides not only the beginning of the nation’s first high-speed rail line that will connect its diverse and growing communities, but also the local connections that will deliver the economic growth from high-speed rail into our towns and cities in the form of travelers be they commuters, tourists or students.

These connections are critical at the local level to enhance California’s regional transportation network. The local commitment to such projects as the SFMTA’s Central Subway, the second phase of the Third Street Light Rail Transit Project, underscores the consistent and strong support this project has seen at all levels government.

The Central Subway ties directly into the future high-speed rail service at 4th and King Station, and it will also be just three blocks from the Transbay Transit Center, the planned terminus for high-speed rail. When completed the Central Subway will provide significant light rail connectivity for high-speed rail and Transbay Transit Center patrons, enabling travel throughout San Francisco and the state.”
