Release date: 5/5/11 *** Press Release ***The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in San Francisco, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today announced that Sunday Streets will roll through the Mission for the first of two Sunday Streets Mission District events starting this weekend, Sunday, May 8. As always, this event will feature a full roster of activities, live music, cultural performances and special events organized by Mission District community-based organizations and merchant groups. “Sunday Streets is a great family activity, it’s a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday and enjoy a sunny day in the Mission,” said Mayor Edwin M. Lee, a strong Sunday Streets advocate who promises an event in Chinatown and North Beach this year in addition to the eight scheduled events taking place from March through October 23. “The Mission District, like Chinatown and North Beach, is a very populated part of the city without a lot of open space for people to bike, exercise, play and socialize – this is why Sunday Streets is so important to these communities.” “We at the SFMTA are delighted and honored to serve as the City’s lead agency for Sunday Streets,” said SFMTA Executive Director/CEO Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr. “This program plays an important role in promoting sustainable transportation, revitalizing neighborhoods and connecting diverse communities across San Francisco.” “Sunday Streets in the Mission is always a celebration, and this year’s event on Mother’s Day gives us more reason to be out here enjoying the car-free streets and family-friendly activities,” said Erick Arguello, President of the Lower 24th Street Merchant Association. The Merchant Association welcomes the program to the neighborhood for the third year and, along with Mission Merchants, recruits local community based organizations, artists and performers to participate by providing events that reflect the district’s Latino heritage. In response to requests to include more of Valencia Street, this year’s Mission Sunday Streets takes place entirely along the merchant corridors of Valencia and 24th streets, reaching five blocks farther north on Valencia Street to Duboce Avenue. “Local businesses are so excited to have Sunday Streets take place on more of Valencia,” said local merchant and President of Valencia Merchants Deena Davenport. Activities, live music, art installations and performances are scheduled along this bike-friendly corridor. The Mission Sunday Streets bike programs herald a strong start to next week’s Bike to Work events. Sunday’s bike programs will include free rentals provided by Bike & Roll and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s popular “Freedom from Training Wheels.” They will be featured at 15th and Valencia streets, so participants without bikes have an opportunity to try bicycling and explore the route by bike. For those with out-of-tune bikes, Mikes Bikes will offer free bike repairs at Sunday Streets’ main hub in on 24th Street at Capp Street. Sunday Streets May 8 Program Highlights:
Sunday Streets is made possible thanks to Mayor Lee and the City of San Francisco and Livable City, the non-profit fiscal sponsor of Sunday Streets responsible for the day-to-day management of the program. City agencies, including the San Francisco Police Department, the Department of Public Works, the Recreation and Parks Department, and the Department of Public Health have provided additional city support. Sunday Streets non-profit partners include the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition that manages Sunday Streets’ volunteer program, the Bay Area Chapter of American Red Cross that provides medical support and City CarShare that provides free use of their fleet of cars. Clear Channel and The San Francisco Examiner have provided media sponsorship. Major funding for Sunday Streets is provided by Sunday Streets Lead Sponsor Bank of America, supporting sponsors AT&T, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Shape Up SF (a program of the departments of Public Health and Children Youth and Families), California Pacific Medical Center, and PG&E.
