The SFMTA Acts To Combat Illegal Right Turns At The Intersection Of Market Street And Octavia Boulevard

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) today announced several measures to address illegal right turns by vehicles on Market Street where Octavia Boulevard becomes the Central Freeway on-ramp. These immediate measures, meant to stop illegal right turns from eastbound Market Street onto the freeway on-ramp, include:

  • The installation of plastic safe-hit posts to the left of the bicycle lane to visually reinforce the No Right Turn regulation and to make the illegal turns more difficult;
  • The installation of a large trailer-mounted electronic sign saying “No Right Turn;”
  • Additional signage to reinforce the turn restriction and to remind motorists to watch for bicyclists; and
  • Improved directional signage to assist motorists accessing the freeway.

The San Francisco Police Department will also increase enforcement efforts at the location. The above measures will be monitored on an ongoing basis to assess their effectiveness. If these measures do not significantly reduce illegal right turns, the SFMTA will work with other City Departments and concerned stakeholders to implement alternate solutions to the problem of motorists making illegal right turns onto the freeway.

“We continue to be committed to making this busy intersection work as safely as possible,” said SFMTA Executive Director/CEO Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr.
