7. Presentation, discussion and possible action regarding the train speed in the Twin Peaks tunnel. (John Haley, Director, Transit Services)
Davide Puglisi, Senior Operations Manager, Transit Services, discussed the speed restriction in the tunnel between the Castro and Forest Hill station. Currently, staff is replacing track at the Eureka curve, before Castro, and should be completed by spring next year. Mr. Puglisi explained that it will take more to relieve the speed restriction because of the capacity of trains in the subway. Mr. Puglisi stated that engineering staff will be preparing a study to increase the speed through the tunnel.
Public Comment:
Edward Mason mentioned the Eureka portal walls collapsed about seven years ago because of a partial implosion and that he lost track of what happened afterwards. He would like to know what happened to the vibration and speed in that section of the tunnel.
Motion 111026.01
The SFMTA CAC recommends that the SFMTA prioritize the re-tracking of the Twin Peaks Tunnel in order to lift the speed restriction.
On motion to approve Motion 111026.01: Approved
Ayes – Ferrario, Riessen, and Weaver
Nayes – None
Absent - Wieser
8. Presentation, discussion and possible action regarding elevator and escalator maintenance. (Ted Aranas, Transit Services)
Scott Broder, Maintenance Engineer, Structures and Ways Division, discussed the maintenance and schedule of elevators and escalators in the Muni Metro subways. Mr. Broder stated that the elevators are all original and have not been replaced since they were installed. The elevators do get wear and tear and that staff keeps up with them as best as possible. Mr. Broder stated that staff is developing a plan to re-build the elevators.
Public Comment:
Roland Wong stated that he rides Muni every day and because he is a wheelchair user, he depends on the elevators working at subway stations. Mr. Wong stated that the elevators are aging and that there will be no parts to keep the elevators working and the disabled community relies on the elevators. Mr. Wong would like to know if Muni has plans to communicate non-working elevators to passenger similar to BART. Mr. Wong stated that when BART elevators are not working, he receives a message alert from BART, which allows him to alter his travel plans.
