*** Press Release ***

The SFMTA this afternoon identified Henry Gray as the Operator of the L Taraval light rail vehicle (LRV) that was the striking train in the accident that occurred at West Portal Station at approximately 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 18. Mr. Gray has been a bus Operator at Muni since 1979 and became a light rail Operator in 2007. All other information related to the Operator continues to be part of the NTSB’s investigation.

In light of recent comments to the media from the Operators’ union that suggested otherwise, SFMTA Executive Director/CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. reiterated today the Agency’s commitment to operating a safe transit system. “While this was clearly a serious accident, the Muni system is a safe one and safety is our absolute top priority,” he said. “We are determined to take every action possible to make sure that this sort of accident does not happen again, and we hope our union partners will join us in those efforts.”

According to the latest information from San Francisco General Hospital, three people, including the operator of the striking LRV, remain at San Francisco General Hospital. Two are listed in good condition and one in fair condition. A fourth person injured in the accident reportedly transferred to another hospital.

The NTSB continues to be the lead investigating agency and will provide any ongoing details of the investigation as they become available.

The NTSB contact is Peter Knudson, Public Affairs Officer, 202.314.6100.
