The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates the Municipal Railway (Muni), is proposing service modifications to most Muni bus routes and rail lines (as well as other cost-saving and revenue-generating solutions) to close a $16.9 million shortfall in its Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 Operating Budget, which ends on June 30.  Significant budget deficits are also projected for Fiscal Years 2011 and 2012.

Balancing the two-year budget for Fiscal Years 2011 and 2012 is dependent upon the actions taken to address the FY 2010 budget deficit.  The continued economic downturn has exhausted the Agency’s reserves and reduced revenues by more than $230 million in the last two fiscal years.

The City Charter requires the SFMTA Board of Directors to approve a balanced two-year budget for FY 2011 and FY 2012 by May 1. A presentation on the FY 2011 and FY 2012 budget prepared for the March 2 Board meeting provides an overview and proposed solutions. For accessibility assistance with the presentation, please contact Joanne Carr, 415.701.4324.

A presentation on the FY 2011 and FY 2012 budget (PDF) (accessible Web page) prepared for the Jan. 29 SFMTA Board of Directors meetings provides a general overview of the expected revenues and expenditures and the changes in each from the current budget year.

Proposals to address the deficits for FY 2011 and FY 2012 will be presented at a future SFMTA Board meeting
